Mission
The South County Indie Arts Society is dedicated to celebrating and promoting independent art in the South San Francisco Bay Area, with a focus on South San Jose, Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to provide a platform for local artists to be heard; to showcase their unique talents and creativity, and to create meaningful connections with each other and their community. We aim to foster a community that appreciates the spirit and beauty of all types of art and the stories behind each creation. Through our work, we seek to inspire a deeper connection with art and support the flourishing indie art scene in our region.
Our values are fair compensation for artists, access to opportunities and education, and respect for all persons.
If we could have a little peace, economic growth, and technical innovation leading to a cultural renaissance, that would be nice too.
The foundation of this group is to get artists meeting and working with other artists to help each other find and take the next steps in our art journeys, whether this is taking on a medium that you haven’t tried yet, talking about your art with a group, taking a class, teaching a class, getting your sellers permit, finding performance opportunities, or if you’re just looking for friends to share your passion for art with.
The inspiration for the project is influenced by the Chat Noir Movement, a cabaret opened in 1881 by Rodolphe Salis, featuring variety shows, music, poetry, and satire in a social melting pot. It was a key part of the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau, known for its vibrant atmosphere, and promoting artistic collaboration. The iconic 19th-century Parisian cabaret in Montmartre was a hub for avant-garde artists, writers, and musicians, fostering bohemian culture, absurdism (fumisme), and spawned a famous satirical newspaper.
